Two Virginia men, one a mere 23 and the other 25, set out on a resort-hopping excursion as two friends might, in Pennsylvania’s Donegal Township. And, as young men sometimes do, as any of us might do or have done, the young man driving had had a bit too much to drink and was driving fast. This risky combination may have made it hard for him to regain control once it was lost after he alleges an animal in the road caused him to swerve suddenly.
When his 2006 Mazda 6 came to rest, it did so on its roof and the passenger, the younger of the two men, was ejected from the car and later pronounced dead.
And now the tragedy continues. The young man driving, likely out for a fun vacation with a friend, had to be flown to the hospital and, once released, was released into the arms of the law. He made bail and now faces charges. The charges are numerous and serious, including homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence of alcohol, homicide by vehicle, driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless driving, reckless endangerment, exceeding the maximum speed limit and driving at an unsafe speed.
People make mistakes. Every single one of us. It is, after all, in our nature. But did we do so with intent to cause harm? Was there malicious intent in this man’s heart? Or was it a tragic accident based upon a bad decision?
