Operation Border to Border results in 20 DUI arrests

Virginia State Police were out in force last weekend as part of a six-state Rt. 15 enforcement effort. Operation Border to Border included law enforcement in New York, Maryland. South Carolina, Pennsylvania and Georgia.

The goal was to improve traffic safety in the congested corridor by conducting sobriety checkpoints, commercial vehicle inspections, saturation patrols and more. Twenty motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, officials said.

In addition, 1,122 motorists were cited for speeding. Virginia troopers in Loudoun County were especially busy, with 253 arrests and summonses on a variety of charges.

You might have seen or gone through the truck inspection checkpoint on Leesburg Pass. Eight-seven motor carrier citations were handed out, with a dozen drivers and their commercial vehicles taken out of service by officers.

Another 12 truckers were ticketed for truck weight violations.

Operation Border to Border was carried out over Friday, Saturday and Sunday up and down the corridor. Troopers in the six states charged 35 motorists for reckless driving and made 28 felony and misdemeanor arrests as part of the operation. There were also 281 seat belt citations issued, as well as 26 tickets for failures to properly make use of child restraint devices.

Those Virginia drivers facing DUI charges must confront a number of possible consequences, including jail time, license suspension, mandated installation of ignition interlock devices in all vehicles that they drive, fines, fees and likely increases in auto insurance rates. Drivers who want to try to minimize the impacts on their lives should discuss their legal options with an experienced DUI attorney.
