How distracted driving affects those on the roads

Memorial Day weekend just passed us by and summer is nearly upon us. Kids will be getting out of school soon, the days are getting hot, and the Fourth of July will be here before we know it.

Many Americans, including those from the Leesburg, Virginia, area, take advantage of the nice weather by going out to ball games or hosting barbeques with family and friends. Especially during the holidays, this often means an increase in drunk driving.

Law enforcement throughout the country is very aware that more are on the road driving while intoxicated, and often take proactive measures to not only dissuade people from drinking and driving, but to try to catch them in the act. Obviously, an officer sitting in his car on the side of the road usually cannot tell if a driver is under the influence. It is not uncommon for police to set up check points at times when they suspect drunk drivers may be on the roads.

If you are arrested under the suspicion of drunk driving and convicted, there are many penalties you may face. First, you will face a driver's license suspension. The time depends on whether this is your first offense, with longer suspensions for repeat offenders. You may also be subjected to fines, time in prison, and depending upon the circumstances of your arrest, may have to attend classes or even have an ignition interlock device installed in your vehicle, at your cost. In addition, you will face significant insurance surcharges. You will also face long-term consequences including having a criminal record, which may come back and haunt you.

The decision to get behind the wheel after drinking was a bad one. You can try to turn your fortunes around though. Choosing a strong legal defense team familiar with DUI/DWI is most definitely a good start.
