Virginia State Police charge 142 with DUI over holiday weekend

Every Memorial Day, traffic soars as people head out to enjoy time with family and friends. This past holiday weekend was no exception.

As they usually do, the Virginia State Police increased their patrols as part of the annual Combined Accident Reduction Effort (Operation C.A.R.E.). As part of the enforcement effort, 142 drivers in the Commonwealth were arrested for DUI.

In addition, the 2014 Memorial Day weekend also had troopers handing out citations to 13,829 drivers accused of speeding, as well as another 3,136 motorists cited for reckless driving.

State Police also report that they issued 340 child safety seat tickets and 1,241 seat belt violations. The seat belt violations are perhaps most noteworthy in a traffic-heavy weekend in which eight people died in car accidents across the state.

Seven of those people were not buckled in at the time of their crashes.

Troopers said they had 463 traffic accidents reported to them over the four-day holiday reporting period that began early Friday morning and ended late Monday night.

Operation C.A.R.E. is part of a national effort to get police departments across the country to make themselves visible on holiday weekends and enforce traffic violations.

The goal is to see traffic fatalities reduced by 15 percent this year while also keeping law enforcement officers safe while they patrol highways and streets.

For those drivers now facing DUI/DWI charges after the holiday, it is time to sit down with an attorney experienced in helping protect clients’ valuable rights, freedoms and driving privileges.
