When LCSO eyes aren’t smiling

Everything from algae to zucchini will be green on St. Patrick’s Day — except the lights atop the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office patrol cars. If the lights go on because a sheriff’s deputy is pulling you over on suspicion of drunken driving, even the luck of the Irish might not save you from a DUI.

However, you might be able to drive right by any flashing police lights while riding in the comfort of a taxi supplied by the SoberRide program. The nonprofit Washington Regional Alcohol Program (WRAP) is supplying free rides (up to a $30 value) starting at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, March 17.

The free taxi rides will continue until 4 a.m. Wednesday, March 18 as a way to keep roads in the eastern part of Loudoun County free of intoxicated drivers.

Anyone who is 21 years old or above and is celebrating St. Patty’s Day with alcohol can call SoberRide at 1-800-200-TAXI (8294). Free rides are available in Washington D.C., Virginia’s Arlington, Fairfax and Prince William counties, as well as in Maryland’s Prince George’s and Montgomery counties.

If you don’t avail yourself of a free ride, and find yourself facing DUI charges, you can still take steps to protect yourself. First, decline to discuss details of your evening or activities with police. Instead, speak with an attorney experienced in DUI defense about the details of your arrest.

In that way, you can be assured that your rights will be protected and that your options are explored at every step of the legal process.
