UVA hoops legend arrested for DUI

It’s about a two-hour drive southwest of Leesburg to Charlottesville. That’s where one of the nation’s very best basketball teams — the University of Virginia Cavaliers — play their home games. It’s also where Sean Singletary, one of the all-time greats to play at the school, had his jersey retired.

However, there were no cheering crowds when Singletary was recently arrested by Charlottesville Police and charged with drunken driving. The former second round NBA pick was pulled over at around 4 a.m. after officers reportedly observed him driving erratically.

He performed field sobriety tests, according to a news report, but then declined to take a breath test. He was arrested for DUI and breath test refusal.

A former member of the Phoenix Suns, Singletary was one of the top scorers in UVA history.

According to a TV station report, Singletary was in Charlottesville to conduct a basketball clinic for the Boys and Girls Club. Perhaps in the future, he will additionally impart lessons on the importance of not drinking and driving.

Another important lesson people in his situation learn is that one mistake doesn’t define you. Everyone makes mistakes. Singletary can tell those kids that the truly important thing is to learn from mistakes and work hard to never repeat them.

With the help of an attorney experienced in DUI defense, it is very possible that Singletary will be able to carry on his good work, teaching kids how to play hoops and perhaps now, also helping them gain even more valuable skills.
